Evaluation of the Parliamentary Experience of Kuwaiti Women (2006-2016): A Field Survey. (English)
    • Abstract:
Since the independence of the country in 1961, Kuwaiti woman has struggled to gain her political rights. The conflict between religious and social obstacles, and the need to establish a modern civil state shaped this challenge. It was not until 2005 when the Kuwaiti Parliament passed a legislation to grant women their political rights. In the 2009 elections, four women were elected for the parliament for the first time, but the number decreased in next elections to one or none. The aim of this paper it to evaluate women’s parliamentary performance since 2005, and to explore the reasons of the decline of women’s representation in the parliament. To fulfill this goal, a survey study was carried including a sample of 544 participants of both sex, taking into consideration gender, education, job, age, electoral constituency and political trends as main variables of study. Examining political awareness, religious and social obstacles, parliamentary performance and the chances of winning in forthcoming elections are also among the goals of this paper. The study recommends several elements to strengthen the political status of women in Kuwait. For example, reinforce the role of women civil societies, the positive usage of social media and to target the social groups who shows less support to women political rights and participation.
