Reading and its context: a wide-angled data analysis. (English)

The paper aims at focusing on some interpretative issues cropping up whenever data on reading are analysed. In particular, examples are given of the various conclusions that can be drawn when a pointby- point, disaggregate analysis of statistical data is carried our, or, alternatively, when their examination is repeated after some time, or when long-term tendencies are gleaned from the analysis of the historical series. Likewise, we could observe an issue in detail, or try and widen our view to focus on the specific situation as a whole in order to put it in context, while trying to ascertain relationships, to trace the casual connections or the influential aspects. The methodologies adopted by ISTAT (The Italian National Institute for Statistics) in the past half century must be put in perspective, in order to understand the motives behind them and the rationale of both questions and answers. Moreover, this way it is possible to see the connections between reading habits and the evolution of the Italian society, thus achieving an overall view of the cultural involvement in our country. We are facing innovatios that radically modify the phenomena we would like to analyse, whose study requires new investigation tools. The old quantitative methods are by now inadequate, while we still little and poorly use qualitative methods and the tools that the web makes available to us, because we have not yet gained enough sound experience to put them into practice. Il contributo si propone di mettere a fuoco alcuni problemi interpretativi che si presentano quando vengano analizzati i dati sulla lettura. In particolare, vengono esemplificate le differenti considerazioni che è possibile fare quando si studiano le statistiche in modo puntuale e disaggregato, oppure quando si torna a esaminarle a distanza di tempo, o quando si cerca di cogliere le tendenze sul lungo periodo dei fenomeni attraverso le serie storiche dei dati. Parimenti, possiamo osservare gli aspetti di dettaglio di una questione oppure provare ad allargare lo sguardo, per inquadrare la situazione specifica nel suo complesso e per contestualizzarla meglio, nel tentativo di stabilire le relazioni e cogliere nessi causali o fattori d'influenza. Le metodologie utilizzate dall'Istat nelle indagini condotte nell'ultimo mezzo secolo vanno anche storicizzate, se si vogliono comprendere le motivazioni da cui esse partono e il senso delle domande poste agli intervistati e le loro risposte. In questo modo, inoltre, si possono cogliere anche le correlazioni esistenti tra le pratiche di lettura e l'evoluzione della società italiana, giungendo così a una visione d'insieme sulla partecipazione culturale nel nostro paese. Siamo in presenza di novità che modificano radicalmente i fenomeni che vorremmo analizzare, il cui studio richiede la messa a punto di strumenti di indagine nuovi. I vecchi metodi quantitativi risultano ormai inadeguati, mentre utilizziamo ancora poco e male i metodi qualitativi e gli strumenti che il web ci mette a disposizione, anche perché non abbiamo ancora accumulato un bagaglio di esperienze consolidate che ne faciliti l'applicazione.
