    • Abstract:
      The author reflects on several things including being an exchange student in France in the late 1940s, growing oranges and lemons in pots outdoors, and meeting Nelson Mandela before he became president in 1994. She comments on spending her 16th birthday in France and learning the senior member of the family she stayed with had been in the Resistance. She mentions how orange and lemons she grew in pots flourished when she ignored them, and talks about shaking the hand of one of Mandela's escort.
