    • Abstract:
Guatemala today is still an Indian country, for less than a tenth of its inhabitants admit the presence of white blood in their veins. No account of Indian paganism is complete without mention of the Black Christ of Esquipulas, a sable image publicly worshiped since the sixteenth century. It is housed in a sumptuous church which dominates the dirty little town of Esquipulas in southern Guatemala, and to it come many thousands every year, even from such distant lands as Mexico and Ecuador.
