This article reports on political activities in California. Given California's free-wheeling style of politics and its system of cross-filing in primaries, it has been a major accomplishment to create a "second" party in the state, not to mention the difficulties involved in creating a third. While a bona fide second party was finally formed in California, the experience has demonstrated that it can win elections only when it succeeds in creating a broad coalition of interest groups based on common support of issues vital to one or more of these groups. In the absence of a coalition neither the Progressive nor the Democratic Party can hope to salvage much from the 1948 election.
