    • Abstract:
A process of acculturation is described in regard to Spanish-surnamed persons who migrated from rural areas to Denver. The urban new- comers relied on helpers or "gatekeepers" for access to resources needed to solve problems encountered in the urban setting. The system of resource exchange represented by the gatekeeper was analyzed. The study indicates that informal channels in the community are used to transfer resources to people in trouble. The efficiency of the informal gatekeeping system is limited and an alternative is suggested which could maintain its informality but increase its usefulness in the urban acculturation process.
