"Sociology by Filipinos": A Case for Nationalist Sociology in the Philippines. (English)
    • Abstract:
In the Philippines, a Pilipino-brand Sociology is generally (and unproblematically) assumed by the community of Pilipino social sciences, sociologists notably. Is there really an autonomous "Sociology by Pilipinos?" If so, how do we describe its features? Why is it important to claim its existence in the country at this point in time? The paper endeavors to find answers to these questions as well as tackle the issues they bring to the fore. To assess the presence (or absence) of a genuine Pilipino Sociology, three ideal types will be proffered: (i) the ethos of research, (ii) the niche of issues, and (iii) the ambit of discourse. As ideal types, they need to fully and aptly satisfy the required conditions that guarantee their Pilipino-ness- that is, a relevance that puts a premium on the nuances of Pilipino culture and history. Toward the end, the article challenges the members of the community of Pilipino sociologists to embrace the idiosyncracies of our historical experience as a nation, as these give birth to a homebred sociology that nourishes the soul of our cultural psyche as a people.
