The Level of Use of Reading Strategies in Arabic Language Reading Comprehension Activities. (English)
- Abstract:
It is a feasible aspiration in this millennial age to accentuate Arabic reading skills intended to develop a proper understanding of a given text among students through various teaching and learning activities namely the use of reading strategy. However, despite the fact that the employment of reading strategies has been proven to be effective as a means to enhance Arabic reading comprehension, the mastery of the strategies among students remains at an unsatisfactory level. This study aims to identify the dimensions of reading strategies as well as the level of use of these strategies in relations with students' reading comprehension with regards to Arabic content. A total of 506 participants; comprised of Islamic Secondary School students were selected through a stratified random sampling to be involved in this study. The data were collected using questionnaires as well as written tests and were analysed descriptively and inferred through Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) analysis. The findings show that the level of use of problem solving strategies is higher compared to the moderate usage of both the global strategies as well as the support strategies. The mastery of Arabic language text reading comprehension shows that the overall mean score of the written test is low. Based on SEM analysis, the reading strategies factor is more dominant than the other factors. The findings of the study imply that teachers ought to devise reading skills activities with the emphasis on the reading strategies in improving the level of language proficiency and thinking skill level.
