The article provides an advice in managing e-mail. Checking e-mail on a regular basis when away from my home computer is a necessity in order to keep things from getting out of hand. Web e-mail has been around for a relatively long time in Internet years and has several advantages. Because it is Web-based, it can be used from any Web-connected computer. Most reputable Web e-mail services have addressed the spammer issue as best as possible by placing limitations on the volume of e-mail sent. PC Magazine's Editor's Choice for Web e-mail went to Mailblocks Extended Service. Mailblocks can collect e-mail from POP e-mail accounts, Yahoo!, Hotmail, and even AOL and uses an e-mail challenge/response technology, as well as disposable e-mail addresses to filter out spam. The biggest drawback to Web e-mail is managing e-mail in two different locations. To address this, instead of Web-based e-mail, you one can opt to connect directly to the computer when away by using remote control software. One should keep in mind that these services will require one to leave the computer turned on and connected to the Internet, making a cable or digital subscriber line always on connection a necessity. The leader in the field of remote control software is unequivocally GoToMyPC.com. One can also use GoToMyPC to share the desktop with someone else in a remote location by right-clicking on the GoToMyPC icon in the system tray and selecting Invite Guest to PC. Google recently upped the ante when it comes to Webmail. On April 1, 2004 Google announced its own Web-based e-mail solution, Gmail. What makes Gmail revolutionary is its search-based approach. It will offer 1 gigabyte of free memory, many times what the other Webmail services offer. INSET: Internet Mailing Lists.
