PRE-WAR ATTEMPTS OF THE LUTHERAN CHURCH TO PUBLISH A HYMNAL IN MODERN LITHUANIAN. (English)
    • Abstract:
By the end of the 1930's Lithuanian Lutherans found themselves in need of a new hymnal to replace the old dialect hymnal Pagérintos giesmjû-knygos (Improved Hymnbook) of the Lithuanian Lutherans in Prussia. Reformed minister Adomas Šernas was already at work revising Reformed and Lutheran hymns, and this fact, together with the unionistic spirit of the time, led the Lutheran consistory to envision a joint hymnal for both churches. Negotiations between the churches and the Ministry of Education are described. The project failed both because of the repatriation of the Lutherans and the Soviet occupation of Lithu ania which made the publication of any religious texts almost impossible. Also a major factor the new consistory's rejection of the radical revision of the hymns proposed by Šernas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
    • Abstract:
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
