    • Abstract:
In the present study, a coupled stress and energy criterion within the framework of finite fracture mechanics is used to predict interlaminar crack onset in composite laminates induced by the free‐edge effect. In order to obtain the required quantities for the evaluation of the coupled criterion the scaled boundary finite element is implemented. This semi‐analytical approach reduces the numerical effort significantly in comparison to standard finite element method. To assess the reliability of the obtained results a comparison to a finite element model is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
