    • Abstract:
This article focuses on the efforts undertaken by U.S. senator Liz Figueroa to introduce legislation for the free electronic mail service offered by Google. The legislative bill that she is working on is written to be rather more general than just applying to Google. It aims to prohibit a provider of electronic mail or instant-messaging services, as defined, that serves California customers, from reviewing or evaluating the content of a customer's electronic mail or instant messages for marketing purposes, as defined, except with the customer's or with the customer's and the sender's consent.
