    • Abstract:
The article discusses the present character of the Democratic Party in California. It states that former representative of the party George Brown came within ten votes of being chosen chairman at a state convention in January 1994. The winner was youthful Charles Manatt, the Southern California attorney who guided John Tunney into the U.S. Senate last fall. In short, the party is in delicate balance. On the one hand the generation just past 30, schooled on the tough-minded politics, is determined to develop a winning mechanism in California and is setting about it with a pragmatism new to Democrats in this notoriously unfettered, loose-hanging state. This group, centered in Los Angeles, California, clean-cut and incisive as a crew of aerospace engineers, has official command.
