- Abstract: While ancient texts are generally keen to describe soundscapes, early medieval literature remains largely silent. How can we explain the dwindling references to sound following the passage from antiquity to the Early Middle Ages? Does this "silencing of the world" point to an alteration of the "objective" soundscape induced by changes in the material and physical environment, and/or does it indicate a deeper shift in the aural culture of the period? If there is reason to suppose that the decline in noise can be partly explained by an overall change in infrastructures, this transformation cannot account for the growing scarcity of sound references in the literature of the time. In order to understand this phenomenon, one must focus on the didactic character of hagiographic literature and on the theological motivations of its authors, whose goal was to sensitize their flock to a "sacred sonography". - Abstract: Alors que les textes antiques abondent en informations sur le paysage sonore, les textes altimédiévaux restent très silencieux. Que s'est-il produit lors du passage de l'Antiquité au haut Moyen Âge pour que le répertoire des manifestations acoustiques s'amenuise de manière aussi sensible? Ce « silencement du monde » est-il l'indice d'une mutation du paysage sonore « objectif » que l'on pourrait attribuer à des changements dans les conditions matérielles et/ou celui d'une profonde mutation de la culture aurale? S'il est raisonnable de supposer que la transformation des infrastructures explique en partie le recul du bruit, elle ne permet pas pour autant d'élucider l'énigme de la raréfaction des indications sonores dont témoignent les textes. Pour comprendre les enjeux qui se cachent derrière ce phénomène, il faut prendre en compte la dimension didactique de la littérature hagiographique et les motivations théologiques des auteurs dont le but est de sensibiliser les fidèles à une « sonographie sacrée ».
