- Abstract:
In this article, the author focuses on the standard of opera concerts and performance during mid-nineteenth century by reviewing various operas. It is reported that prime exhibits in this area have long been the concert performances in which the American Opera Society revives obscure operas, usually with one or two performers surrounded by a supporting cast ranging from capable to inept. One of the operas that came off well in such a concert performance was "Mefistofele," by Arrigo Boito and performed by the Society in 1966. Other theatrical productions reviewed are "Faust," by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe; "Otello" and "Falstaff," by Giuseppe Verdi.
