- Abstract:
The article provides an overview of the history of the Manx language, the Gaelic language of the Isle of Man. Gaelic was brought to the Isle by Irish Christian monks in the fourth and fifth centuries, was influenced by the Vikings, and developed on its own after the last King of Mann died in 1265 and the island passed into the alternate possession of Scotland and England until being given to Sir John Stanley, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, in 1405. Tourism by English in the 19th century caused a loss of native speakers as the ability to speak English provided pathways to wealth.
