- Abstract:
The Institute of Medicine announced some new guidelines for healthy diets in February 2004. The U.S. government uses the institute's guidelines. Food labels are based on nutrient levels set by the institute. Nutrients include the vitamins and minerals human bodies need. Studies show that the average person eats more than 4,000 mg of sodium a day. The institute said most of the people of the U.S. need more potassium. They should take in 4,700 mg a day.
