The migratory careers of international students at a research university in Quebec: Rethinking mobility and anchoring.

This article's goal is to examine the dialectic between mobility and place-attachment of international students registered at a research university in the province of Quebec. After exposing the dynamic of growth in the numbers of international students in Canada and Quebec, we presented these students' profiles and analyzed the strategic elaboration of their mobility projects, from their installation into the "student profession" to their career plans after graduation. Our analyses point to international students of relatively high socioeconomic backgrounds who already possessed 'mobility capital' in their countries of origin. Their motivations for studying in Quebec are consistent with personal strategies concerning academic and professional goals. Integrated into Canadian and Quebecois professional networks thanks to research opportunities offered by host universities, they mostly strive for an international career. Some of them wish to either remain in Quebec or move to another Canadian province to begin their professional life and a tiny minority plans to return to their country of origin after graduation. The results call for a change of perspective on the migratory process, which can no longer be approached exclusively from the angle of integration as a unidirectional process which follows a linear trajectory from home to host country. L'objectif de cet article est d'examiner la dialectique entre la mobilité et l'ancrage des étudiants internationaux inscrits dans une université de recherche au Québec. Après avoir exposé la dynamique de la croissance du nombre d'étudiants internationaux au Canada et au Québec, nous avons présenté le profil de ces étudiants et analysé les logiques de l'élaboration de leur projet de mobilité, l'installation dans le « métier d'étudiant » et les plans de carrière après la fin des études. Il ressort de nos analyses que les étudiants internationaux ont des origines socioprofessionnelles relativement élevées et qu'ils disposaient déjà, dans leur pays d'origine, d'un capital migratoire. Les motifs pour étudier au Québec s'inscrivent dans des stratégies personnelles en lien avec leurs objectifs académiques et professionnels. Intégrés dans des réseaux professionnels québécois et canadiens grâce à des opportunités de recherche offertes dans l'université d'accueil, ils visent majoritairement une carrière à l'international. Une partie d'entre eux comptent rester au Québec ou aller dans une autre province canadienne pour entamer leur vie professionnelle et une infime minorité projette de retourner dans le pays d'origine après les études. Les résultats présentés appellent à un changement de perspective sur le processus migratoire qui ne peut plus être abordé exclusivement sous l'angle de l'intégration comme processus unidirectionnel au fil d'un trajet comportant un début et une fin.
