    • Abstract:
This article deals with the settlement agreements reached by Microsoft Corp. in ten U.S. states where class-action lawsuits were filed on behalf of consumers who alleged that Microsoft Corp. used its monopoly status to overcharge its products. In those states, individuals and business are eligible for vouchers to obtain rebates for the purchase of new computer hardware and software including non-Microsoft products. The eligibility requirements and deadlines vary from state to state, in general, anyone who purchased Microsoft software from the mid-1990s through the early 2000s is eligible. In most state the rebate amounts are $12 for each copy of Windows 95, 98, or Me, and $5 for each copy of Microsoft Office or its stand-along applications. Californians get $29 for each copy of Office, $26 for Excel, $16 for Windows, and $5 for Word. In many state consumers can claim rebates for a select number of product without any proof of purchase. The claim forms for participating states, as well as for more information about the cases are available online. As of May 2004, one can currently apply for rebates in California, Florida, Kansas, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
