Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - first-line treatment in muscle and joint pain. (English)
- Abstract:
There are many types of pain, classified according to its duration, mechanism of action and the site of pain, with direct impact on treatment strategy. This article adresses the therapeutic features of musculoskeletal pain. The systemic administration of acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is efficient, but limited by their hepatic and gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and renal adverse reactions, respectively. NSAIDs can be applied topically, as oinment, gel or spray, being just as effective as oral administration in hand and knee osteoarthritis. Their safety is superior to the systemic administration of NSAIDs, too. Currently, several osteoarthritis pain manangement guidelines recommend the use of topically aplied NSAIDs as first-line therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
- Abstract:
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
