    • Abstract:
Presents a commentary on cross-species transmissions of simian retroviruses in Africa and the risks to human health. Lists some of the zoonotic diseases affecting mankind including AIDS and T-lymphotropic virus; Article in this Lancet which describes the transmission of another group of simian retroviruses, simian foamy viruses into the human population in the forest area of Cameroon; Testing of the people working with simians who tested positive; No evidence yet of disease in the positive humans and no human-to-human transmission seen; Call for further studies as the virus may have a long incubation period; Belief that providing alternative protein sources for those who hunt and eat simians might help prevent cross-species transmissions.
