COMPARISON OF GROWTH AND GONADAL DEVELOPMENT IN COMMON CARP, (Cyprinus carpio communis) AND ITS STRAIN, 'AMUR CARP' (Cyprinus carpio haematopterus). (English)
    • Abstract:
The present study was conducted for comparing the growth and gonadal development of common carp (Cyprinus carpio communis) with Amur carp (Cyprinus carpio haematopterus) under Tarai conditions of Uttarakhand. Condition factor, somatic condition factor, specific growth rate, percent increment in body weight & length and hepatosomatic index were recorded for assessing growth and well being of fish. Gonadosomatic index, fecundity, sperm count were taken as indicators of reproductive profile. Experiment was conducted for 60 days and fish were fed with conventional feed @ 5% body weight twice daily. Available data indicated that Amur carp performed better than common carp with regard to growth and gonadal development. Observations show that Amur carp grows faster than common carp and values of CF, SCF and HSI were found to be better for Amur carp. Also, GSI, Fecundity and sperm count were higher in Amur carp in comparison to common carp. On the basis of these observations we can say that Amur carp is more apt than common carp for aquaculture production system in Tarai region of Uttarakhand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
