      In the new era of globalization, followed by liberalization and deregulation, contemporary concept of competitiveness is determined by productivity, which is a function of the ways companies compete, their capability to apply sophisticated methods and advanced technology and to offer unique products with high added value and diversified services. Sophistication of business operations is determined by the business environment in certain location. Competitiveness in contemporary economic relations is function of innovative capabilities of companies in conjunction with supportive government policy which will ensure legal, administrative, institutional and infrastructure framework in order to provide sustainable rise and growth to all business entities. Empirical evidence confirms that industrial clusters through their multidimensional model of networking and information exchange can enhance competitiveness through driving innovation, productivity growth and stimulating formation of new businesses. This paper analyses Porter's theory for competitive advantages of nations, role of clusters in enhancing competitiveness, drawing conclusions and recommendations for application of the model of clusters as a factor for competitiveness improvement in Republic of Macedonia.
