- Abstract: Education represents one of the pivotal debates that took place during the era of Liberal Revolution in Spain. The controversies that surrounded education — particularly following the outbreak of the Peninsular War — cannot be understood without addressing their fundamentally political nature. This article adopts a historical-conceptual perspective to examine the link between public education and sovereignty; it interrogates how distinct perspectives on this subject reflect a particular notion of the relationship between civil and religious power. The events of 1808 and the Cortes de Cádiz allow a reformulation of the relationship between the Church and the State, which had been growing in complexity since the era of the Bourbon Reforms. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the ways in which, particularly in periods of crisis, pedagogical discourses and practices become central to historical semantics. Revolving around the concept of sovereignty, the battle for education enables us to develop our understanding of the way in which public instruction is linked to fundamental questions in the origins of liberal Spain, such as regalism and secularisation. - Abstract: La educación es uno de los debates fundamentales en la época de la Revolución liberal en España. Las controversias en torno a la educación, de modo particular a partir del estallido de la Guerra de la Independencia, no pueden entenderse sin considerar su naturaleza fundamentalmente política. Desde un enfoque histórico-conceptual, este artículo examina el vínculo entre educación pública y soberanía, así como el modo en que las distintas posiciones acerca de la cuestión reflejaban una comprensión específica acerca de la relación entre poder civil y poder religioso. Los acontecimientos de 1808 y las posteriores Cortes de Cádiz permitieron la reformulación de unas relaciones entre Iglesia y Estado en creciente complejidad desde las reformas borbónicas. Este trabajo muestra la importancia, en especial durante los períodos de crisis, de los discursos y prácticas educativas para la semántica histórica. Basculando sobre el concepto de soberanía, la batalla por la educación nos permite una mejor comprensión de los modos en que la instrucción pública se liga cuestiones tan cruciales en los orígenes de la España liberal como el regalismo y la secularización.
