Local Abstract: [PIP] This study investigates the correlates of premarital sexuality in Nigeria based on the 1990 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey among 1540 female adolescents and young adults. The study revealed that 38% of the participants were sexually experienced. Exposure to premarital sex increases with age, from less than 10% of youth aged 15 years to 77% at age 24 years. The mean age at first sexual encounter is 16.7 years, with little variation among sociocultural characteristics, an indication of early initiation of sexual experience, and about 59% had at least one sexual act during the 4 weeks prior to the survey. Furthermore, the multivariate analysis show that sexual exposure, coital frequency and sexual activity vary considerably with some of the control variables, such as place of residence, ethnicity, educational attainment, work status and current age. The data presented in this study indicates that premarital sexual relations in Nigeria are common and pervasive over time.
