Local Abstract: [PIP] In all societies, adolescents undergo physical and emotional changes which they may not understand. They are particularly vulnerable to peer pressure and the need for approval. Moreover, risk-taking is inherent to adolescence. These factors combine to place adolescents at high risk for STDs, unintended pregnancy, poor maternal and child health, and unsafe abortion. There are now more than 1 billion people aged 10-19 years worldwide, the largest generation of young people ever to be poised to move into adulthood. In the developing world, more than one-third of the population is under age 15 years; in sub-Saharan Africa and some other regions, that proportion has risen to one half. Adolescents' special needs and constraints pose unique challenges with regard to the delivery of reproductive health services. For reproductive health services targeted to adolescents to be effective, young people's perspective must be determined and incorporated into programs' design, implementation, and evaluation. Programmatic considerations are discussed. AVSC is involved in a number of projects designed to meet the reproductive health needs of adolescents.
