Local Abstract: [PIP] A new approach to the study of population problems is proposed based on the realities of the modern world. The author notes that, in contrast to the traditional concern with the relationship between population growth and economic development, two new factors have become of major importance: first, limits to natural resources and concerns with the environment, and second, changes in the structure of populations due to longer life spans. The author suggests that the focus of population studies should be switched from a concern with economic growth to achieving a coexistence between human beings and nature. The probability of an actual decline in population size as the twenty-first century develops is seen not as a problem but as a natural phenomenon in the population history of a species, and the need to develop a new socioeconomic system that can adapt to these demographic changes is stressed.
