Local Abstract: [PIP] This study is concerned with the relationship between migration and socioeconomic development. Some of the factors affecting migration considered are the availability of information and training, the legal status of migrants, the recognition of migrant associations, the coordination of international and local policies, and the process of migrant integration. Particular attention is given to the findings of some Italian research on migrant remittances and their impact on the development process. The author attempts to replace the traditional concept that migration problems will be solved by the development process with one in which migrants are seen as being an active agent in the process of development and change.
