Local Abstract: [PIP] The Deputy Executive Director of the UN Population Fund praised the Asian Forum for its efforts to bring together parliamentarians from all over the world to shape the international agenda which emerged from the recent series of UN-sponsored conferences and summits. The contributions of parliamentarians were particularly significant in the context of the International Conference on Population and Development, the World Summit on Social Development, and the Fourth World Conference on Women. Each of these events was preceded by international meetings of parliamentarians at the initiative of the Asian Forum. Parliamentarians from 29 countries meeting at the September 1995 Asian Forum general assembly adopted the Canberra Statement on Food Security, Population, and Development, a statement reflecting the commitment of parliamentarians to take concerted action with regard to food security and population. Population growth will compound the issue of food security in the future.
