Local Abstract: [PIP] Adult ambivalence toward adolescent sexuality makes it difficult to develop and implement and HIV and STD prevention programs. Many adolescents begin having sexual intercourse very early in the course of their lives and they need access to the material and educational resources capable of protecting them from infection with HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STD). There is some evidence that parents in both developed and developing countries are largely in favor of providing sex education in schools. Effective education in such settings aimed at preventing HIV/STD transmission should include biomedical facts, information on transmission routes, and address individual behavior in risk situations. The abilities to make decisions, be assertive under pressure, and use condoms are needed to prevent STD/HIV infection. The author concludes in noting that families could discuss AIDS as an entry point to the discussion of more broad issues of sexuality. Such conversation would complement school-based sex education programs.
