    • Abstract:
The article discusses the effects of taking antibiotics as they indiscriminately kill bacteria including the good bacteria. Many researchers are now considering treating the infections without killing the bacteria. This strategy has been used to treat urinary tract infections (UTI), mostly caused by Escherichia coli, where the patients were given the simple carbohydrate D-mannose and it was found that only 15 percent got a UTI as against 20 percent of those treated with antibiotics.
