    • Abstract:
The article focuses on the life of immigrant women by referring to the book "Immigrant Women in the Land of Dollars: Life and Culture on the Lower East Side," by Elizabeth Ewen. Ewen is the first historian to write about immigration in the context of social changes, and about the development of mass culture in terms of groups generally considered to it be outside it. Immigrant culture persisted in and even influenced American life. Preindustrial values, customs and family structure played an active role in a process not of cultural disintegration but of adaptation and reorientation.
