    • Abstract:
For two centuries immigrants have been drawn to the United States by the promise of freedom, prosperity, a better life. And the United States has long defined itself as a nation of immigrants. Establishing how many undocumented immigrants there are in the United States is difficult. Most Central American undocumented immigrants make the long journey north through Mexico and sneak over the border to the United States. Today an undercurrent of anti-immigrant sentiment-which has probably always run through society to a greater or lesser degree can be discerned in certain quarters. Immigrants are often blamed for a variety of economic and social ills.
