    • Abstract:
In recent years, prime time shows in television are packed with cursing children, adulterous adults, and sexually active teenagers. Concern over the content of television shows led to the development of a rating system similar to that used by the motion picture industry. When feature-length films began to appear, those depicting prostitution, birth control, abortion, venereal disease, and true crime all came under attack by moralists, particularly when children were allowed to see them. On November 4, 1907, Chicago, Illinois, became the first major city to establish a system of prior censorship by authorizing police to deny a permit to any film they judged immoral or obscene.
