    • Abstract:
Information Literacy (IL) is firmly ensconced within libraries, but it does not always travel well to other disciplines. One reason may be words "information" and "literacy" themselves. This article looks at some of the embedded notions in these terms and suggests an alternate approach derived from the critic Walter Benjamin. The Association of College and Research Libraries has given a definitive form to what constitutes IL. Several accrediting bodies now include IL among other things that they look for in their evaluations of colleges and universities.
