    • Abstract:
The U.S. was different in 1861 than it is today. The Northern states had just become industrialized, meaning that the people lived in big cities and worked in factories that produced goods. People in the South lived on farms or in small towns and most of them worked at growing crops, such as cotton and tobacco. The Southerners also did not like being dependent on Northerners for things like clothes, books, and even farming equipment. They felt threatened by the rapid population growth in the North, since it gave the Northern states more votes in the federal government. INSET: Untitled.
