The article focuses on the scientific work of French botanist and professor Jean-Emmanuel Gilibert on wild mammals of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Topics discussed include Gilibert who was allowed by Antoni Tyzenhauz, treasurer of the Grand Duchy, to keep and observe wild fauna kept in royal forests; Gilbert's description of European bison, among other wild mammals found in the forests of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania; and other mammal species watched by Gilibert which included brown bear, wolf, beaver and hedgehog.
