      An essay is provided which discusses the relationship between 19th century French political scholar Alexis de Tocqueville's perspective on U.S. elections and democracy in the early 1830s and the 2016 U.S. presidential election, including in regard to the emotion aspects of elections. An overview of the campaign of 2016 U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is provided.
