- Abstract:
Researchers at the University of Florida's College of Dentistry recently used finite element analysis to find factors that contribute to the failure of ceramic dental crowns. Dental crowns are designed to withstand various types and magnitudes of applied loads or biting forces, said Barry Hojjatie, one of researchers involved in the project. But unlike metallic crowns, ceramic crowns have a 35 percent failure rate during the first three years in the patient's mouth. The brittle nature of dental ceramics, heavy biting forces and improper crown design usually can be blamed for the failure.
