      Around the world, there are annual Qur'anic contests in which both young and old try to prove their skills at reciting Islam's sacred text. Competitors are not permitted to use any notes, and they are not told ahead of time the verses they will be required to recite. One of the most famous competitors is Seyyed Muhammad Tabatabaei, an Iranian child who traveled to Mecca and amazed scholars with his Qur'anic recitation skills at the age of five. Now in his teens, Muhammad has received five doctorate degrees in Islamic and Qur'anic studies.
