- Abstract: The article discusses the hydroelectric Atlantropa project proposed in the 1920s by German architect Herman Sörgel which would erect an oceanic dam at the Straits of Gibraltar. He calculated that the dam would provide power resources for all of Europe and Africa, lower the level of the Mediterranean Sea, allowing for an extension of land settlement and use, provide access from Africa to Europe creating a super-continent, and change the environmental conditions of the Sahara, allowing for its agricultural development, and promote peace and political stability.
