      The article presents a comparison of two art exhibitions separated by 200 years, "Phantasmagoria" which premiered in France in the 1790s and "Tall Ships" by video artist Gary Hill which premiered in Germany in 1992. Topics discussed include differences in media used and similarity in the relationship created between image and spectator. The failure of avant-garde art and film scholars to provide a critical evaluation of "Phantasmagoria" due to its negative associations is mentioned.
