For a country to develop properly, progress in various fields of economy, science, technology and the arts is necessary, and for this the training of professionals who are capable of doing science and advanced technology is necessary. Institutions of higher education are responsible for completing the training of graduates with a high scientific level. The training of doctors in Cuba dates back only 22 years when a National System of Scientific Degrees was structured. The University of Havana has a staff of excellence that provides a postgraduate education that contributes with results that produce social benefits. The objective of this work was to perform a characterization of some of the factors that influence the behavior of the training process of doctors at the University of Havana and compare them in the areas of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences and Humanities in the period 2008 to 2013. The research was carried out by applying a survey designed taking into account factors that could influence the training process of doctors. As a result of this work it was possible to characterize the number of graduates, their age and participation in research groups, projects and networks, and the impact of mentors and collaborators in their training at the University of Havana, and also to compare the performance in this process between the areas of the Natural Sciences and Social Sciences and Humanities. Para que un país se desarrolle adecuadamente es necesario que se avance en los más diversos campos de la economía, las ciencias, la tecnología y las artes, y para esto es necesaria la formación de profesionales que sean capaces de hacer ciencia y tecnología de avanzada. Los centros de educación superior son los encargados de cumplimentar la formación de graduados con un alto nivel científico. La formación de doctores en Cuba data sólo de 22 años, en que se estructuró un Sistema Nacional de Grados Científicos. La Universidad de La Habana cuenta con un claustro de excelencia que permite una educación posgraduada que aporta resultados que se revierten socialmente. El objetivo del trabajo fue realizar una caracterización de algunos factores que inciden en el comportamiento del proceso de formación de doctores en la Universidad de La Habana y comparativamente en las áreas de Ciencias Naturales y Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades en el periodo 2008 al 2013. La investigación se realizó mediante la aplicación de una encuesta diseñada teniendo en cuenta aquellos factores que pudieran incidir en el proceso de formación de doctores. Como resultado del trabajo fue posible caracterizar el número de graduados, edad, participación en grupos de investigación, proyectos y Redes, así como la incidencia de tutores y colaboradores en la formación doctoral en la Universidad de La Habana y comparar el comportamiento entre las áreas de las Ciencias Naturales y Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades con vistas a contribuir a la formación de doctores.
