      This article argues that the seemingly useful methodological and hermeneutic circle that would employ 'historical' productions to illuminate and validate textual readings of Elizabethan plays is fraught with complicating factors -- factors that can limit and vitiate its effectiveness as an exploratory tool. Imperfect understandings of the spatial implications of the texts allied to outdated hypothetical reconstructions of the original playing spaces can compound each other. The article suggests that instead of fully fledged productions, an exploratory 'workshop' approach provides a more effective methodological approach to an understanding of the dynamics between original performance conditions and the texts written for them.       Dans cet article, nous étudions les facteurs susceptibles de perturber le cercle herméneutique et méthodologique potentiellement utile qui utiliserait des mises en scènes 'historiques' pour éclairer et valider des interprétations textuelles des pièces élisabéthaines: ces facteurs peuvent limiter et vicier son efficacité comme outil d'investigation. Une compréhension imparfaite des enjeux spatiaux des textes associée à des reconstructions hypothétiques des espaces de jeu d'origine peut produire un effet de distorsion. À la différence des mises en scène d'une oeuvre entière, un travail exploratoire en atelier nous semble permettre une approche méthodologique susceptible d'éclairer la dynamique entre les conditions de mise en scène de l'époque et les textes écrits pour ces espaces.
