    • Abstract:
This article focuses on the battle of cosmetics makers in Europe. The battle of the doorbells is escalating in eastern Europe. Last month cosmetics maker Mary Kay, continuing its global chase of rival Avon, opened an assault in Poland. Avon has been in Poland for a decade and sales hit $150 million last year. Dallas-based Mary Kay's $1.4 billion in sales are a quarter of Avon's. A multinational's success abroad depends, as always, on how well it can customize its business to local needs. The trademark Mary Kay sales incentive--a pink Cadillac--becomes, in eastern Europe, a silver BMW.
