- Abstract:
The article focuses on the book "Continental Drift," by Russell Banks. Early in "Continental Drift," Russell Banks compares the migrations of humanity to those of the elements: tides, winds, whole landmasses making their well-mapped, decorous circuit of the planet. One of the marvels of this book is the way it combines such an aerial perspective with particular, earthbound lives. The slight flattening of tone is all the more striking because these chapters also carry supernatural accents, people and animals speaking in tongues. Despite its alternating narrative, "Continental Drift" is essentially the story of Bob Dubois.
