- Abstract:
Reviews the books, International Security and Gender by Nicole Detraz (2012); Beyond the Fragments: Feminism and the Making of Socialism (3rd Rev. Ed.) by Sheila Rowbotham, Lynne Segal, and Hilary Wainwright (2012); and Global Border Crossings: Feminist Activists and Peace Workers Collaborating Across Cultures, edited by Kathryn L. Norsworthy and Ellyn Kaschak (2013). These three volumes share only a deeply feminist perspective on contemporary political life. In style and substance they vary considerably, one dealing with the field of international security studies, another with the intersection of feminism and socialism, and the third with cross-cultural peace building. Yet, there are lessons to be learned from the sum of these disparate books, for feminists, for those interested in politics, and for psychologists. What we see in these three books is a move toward applying feminist insights to phenomena more traditionally considered nongendered: international security, socialist politics, and peace building. This is feminism come of age, assured of itself and the value of its insights. One comes away from the set with a confident sense of the truly transformative power of the "gender lens" as it continues to modify our understandings and actions in the 21st century.
