ABSTRACT: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is both a common and controversial psychiatric diagnosis. The controversy surrounds its origins, empirical validity, and potential over-diagnoses across child and adolescent populations. This paper summarizes the debate and presents the historical development of this mental health disorder across the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders lifetime (first DSM to DSM-5). The analysis of the ADHD empirical development finds at best intermittent validity attained, raising concerns and implications for clinical mental health practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
