      This essay examines how explorations of history can positively influence studies of gender. It discusses the role of the newspaper "The Brooklyn Eagle" in framing the debate on a birth method called Twilight Sleep (TS) in Brooklyn, New York. Also mentioned are way the newspaper discussed TS, sources of the TS debates in New York City from 1914-1918, and the initial findings of the author's study about the protective attitude of women.
