The article presents demographic, political, economic and social outlook of the Netherlands as of August 18, 2003. Geographic area of the country is 41, 526 sq. km. and its population is 16.2 million. Ethnic groups are predominantly Dutch. Largest minority communities are Moroccans, Turks, Surinamese. Political parties of the Netherlands are Christian Democratic Appeal, Labor Party, Liberal Party and other minor parties. Several industries of the country include agriculture industries, steel and aluminum, metal and engineering products, electric machinery and equipment, bulk chemicals, natural gas, petroleum products, transport equipment and microelectronics. Following Napoleon's defeat in 1813, the Netherlands and Belgium became the "Kingdom of the United Netherlands" under King Willem I, son of Willem V of Orange. The country's government is based on the principles of ministerial responsibility and parliamentary government. Dutch economic policy is geared chiefly toward sustained and environmentally sustainable economic growth and development by way of fiscal consolidation, labor and product market reforms, economic restructuring, energy conservation, environmental protection, regional development and other national goals.
